The compost bin isn't working for me. I'm going to make some changes to better suit my own situation. The truth is, even with a full size allotment, it's very difficult to produce enough organic waste to fill a compost bay this size. What I realise I need to do is split this into two. Maybe even add a third. This will create smaller bins but means I can fill them faster. And that's what you need. Get the bin (whatever its size) as full as possible and as quickly as possible as I think it will heat up faster and produce compost more efficiently. With multiple small bins next to each other I can get smaller, fuller compost piles on the go. It's on my winter to-do list. . . . . . #allotment #compost #kitchengarden  #thehappygardeninglife  #allotmentlife  #allotmentuk #growyourownfood #organicgardening #foodgarden #urbangardening  #gardenactivist #growsomethinggreen #growyourownveggies  #lovegardening #allotmentgarden #gardensofinstagram #growfood #gardenblogger  #growwhatyoulove

Also known as breadfruit, ‘ulu is a local produce found on the Hawaiian Islands and in the Caribbean, South Asia, and Polynesia that is nutritious, delicious, underutilized, and extremely versatile—it can be enjoyed and prepared as a fruit or a vegetable. When roasted, it resembles baked bread. When ripe, you can eat the soft, pudding-like texture like a custard. • Ulu - a sustainable fruit -An ancient example of modern-day sustainable agriculture, the life of an ‘ulu tree spans decades. As legend has it, the god Ku transformed himself into an ‘ulu tree to feed his human family and spread the fruit trees throughout the Hawaiian Islands. #thehappygardeninglife #healthymeals #healthybodyhealthymind #breadfruit

2. Você come os cajus. 8. Tcham ram!!! This moment with a bucketload of zinnias brought to you by @sowrightseeds - who I purchased a multivariety seed assortment from thanks to @melonmonologues - and powdery mildew, which cut their lives short yesterday (snip, snip). I will now take this opportunity to send out a PSA on powdery mildew. Happy Mildew Monday! First: it’s fine. It’s all gonna be fine. Powdery mildew, which presents as a fine white dust on leaves, is not harmful to humans. Over time it will spread to all your plants if you leave it untreated, resulting in stunted growth and meager harvests. Powdery mildew seems to be pretty rampant this year, and it’s definitely the season for it, as the sun isn’t warming and drying out our gardens. Mildew thrives in wet conditions and worsens when plants aren’t given proper circulation - another good reason to space your plants and thin as needed. Overhead watering is also an accomplice. You can combat it by pinching off affected leaves early, with an organic fungicide like neem or potassium bicarbonate (a teaspoon of baking soda in a gallon of water is a home remedy), and supposedly a little apple cider vinegar in water works as well, though I haven’t tried this myself (the acetic acid in vinegar works against the fungus). There are many organic fungicides on the market you can pick up at your local nursery, it’s one of the most common garden hassles! If rampant, and the plants must be pulled like my zinnias (it is the end of the season after all) - make sure to treat the soil with your fungicide as well. Just spray your soil with the same thing you used on the plant itself, and don’t even think about putting mildewed plants into your compost or you risk next season’s plants. After stripping the mildewed leaves from these flowers, they still look beautiful. And I’ll be enjoying them through Thanksgiving in a nice big vase!

𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐬𝐨𝐢𝐥. The fastest way to get that deep layer of fertile soil is to make raised beds. Raised beds yield up to four times more than the same amount of space planted in rows. That’s due not only to their loose, fertile soil but also to efficient spacing. By using less space for paths, you have more room to grow plants. Raised beds save you time, too. One researcher tracked the time it took to plant and maintain a 30-by-30-foot garden planted in beds, and found that he needed to spend just 27 hours in the garden from mid-May to mid-October. Yet he was able to harvest 1,900 pounds of fresh vegetables. That’s a year’s supply of food for three people from about three total days of work! . 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐞: tinyurl.com/vyfhql7 . Lettuce has sprouted underneath the hoop house! I have never had sprouts in the garden this time of year and was skeptical about these seeds even being able to germinate with the cooler temps but here they are! There is sun in the forecast this week, which should give these little seedlings a boost, and I’m hoping it will be enough to help them get fully established before the calendar turns to winter (temperature-wise). This year is an experiment with the hoop houses (next year I intend to have an actual growing plan) so these little sprouts were pretty exciting to discover! We might just have some winter greens after all! #playingwithmud . 🌱 🌱 🌱 🌱 #seedtosprout #seedlings #grownfromseed #homegrown #homegrownveggies #homegrownfood #growyourownfood #growwhatyoueat #growfood #growfoodnotlawns #getgrowing #vegetablegarden #vegetablegardening #hoophouse #fallgarden #mygarden #backyardgarden #backyardgardener #pnwgarden #pnwgardening #organicgarden #organicgardening #urbanorganicgardener #urbangarden #urbangardening #gardening #kitchengarden #ediblegarden #thehappygardeninglife

This is today's last photo update from the summer of 2019. September is a mid-month, as the summer lingers during the day, but meets the fall at night. The first frost pulled in and we went to Falkenberg to celebrate that the book script was finally submitted. More bathing, but slightly colder than in July. I picked up grass clippings at the church and was glad for the summer seeds that I could sow both in the tunnel and in the kitchen garden. I picked rosehip and we made apple juice. Great days! Thank you for following me through the summer and pepping me and for giving me new ideas. I hope you are occasionally inspired by what I did too. If you want to see more summer pictures, you can have a look at my Facebook page Sara's Kitchen Garden where I've shared pictures from June - September during the day. And at www.sarabackmo.com there are new posts and articles to read for those who want more inspiration about gardening. #garden #saraskitchengarden #sarabäckmo #gardeningtips #gardeninginspiration #gardenbeds #gardenblogger #gramyourgarden #ilovegardening #veggiepatch #veg #plot #gardeningmakesmehappy #thehappygardeninglife #organicgardening #ediblegardens #crop #countryliving #swedishgarden #homestead #getyourhandsdirty #greenthumb #greenfeed #greenfingers
