Exciting things are happening here at Olam! In the next month or two we'll be relocating to the Los Angeles National Forest. Can't wait to share with you all our news. Our first visitor in need (dragonfly!) showed up in our Director of Conservation's car, unable to fly. Yulee realized it was covered in spiderwebs. Wings frozen, legs stuck in place. Insect bodies are exoskeletal and are very fragile because of this. We needed to carefully remove the spiderwebs in order to free the dragonfly. It was a long deliberate process, but our visitor was very cooperative. After giving it some water, we waited to see if it could fly. It tested over and over again. Failing over and over again, until finally, success! We were so happy to see the wings and legs remained uncompromised. Dragonflies are intergral to the ecosystem. They spend their larval and pupal stages in water, providing nutrients to the aquatic ecosystem and cleaning it by eating larvae of other harmful wildlife. During their adult stages they prey on insects that can cause humans harm. They also play an ecological role as prey, not only predators, for birds, frogs, and other wildlife. And, they are stunning to look at! . . . #wildliferehab #natureconservation #olamecocenter #nativecalifornia #naturephotography #naturetherapy #dragonfly #insects

Mental wellness is a major aspect of our program. We couldn't have summed it up more perfectly, thank you @the.holistic.psychologist for this! Olam Eco Center offers an opportunity for our participants to create mental wellness and hit all these aspects by engaging nature conservation, ecology, ecopsychology, and various other programs. We can't wait to share it with you when we open our doors. Don't hesitate to contact us at connect@olamecocenter.org . . . #mentalhealth #naturetherapy #natureconservation #recovery #ecopsychology #ecology

Today is #WorldEnvironmentDay! A day we can reflect on this beautiful planet we call home. A day to remind us that our planet is hurting, the environment is hurting, people are hurting! Today, we ask you to spend a few moments reflecting on the little things we can do in our daily lives to better care for our planet and all its inhabitants. . . . #worldenvironmentday #ecocenter #thereisnoplanetb #mentalhealth #recovery #natureconservation #wildliferehab

Desmond Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town, believes that taking care of the symptom doesn't solve the problem. We need to find the cause, and start healing there. Olam Eco Center has a similar perspective. We take a unique approach on nature conservation and mental health. The two are connected. We are not pulling people out of the river, we are finding out why they are falling in, and taking action there. We do this through nature conservation projects, wildlife rehabilitation, pollinator restoration, and mental health healing. If you are interested in learning more about our program, you can contact us at connect@olamecocenter.org while our website is under construction! . . . #natureconservation #mentalhealth #naturetherapy #ecopsychology #floraandfauna #environmentalconservation #nonprofit #wildlifeconservation #olamecocenter #ecocenter #thereisnoplanetb

Valley Carpenter Bees (Xylocopa varipuncta) are one of the native bees that live in California! Native bees, unlike honey bees, usually do not live in hives, but rather live solitarily either by make tunnels in the dirt or in wood. Having this native bee hotel (as pictured) is a great way to invite these docile bees into our gardens! The males have no stingers, so they pose no threat. The females, who are metallic black, have stingers but will not sting unless provoked. If you are interested in a bee hotel, there's lots of ways you can make them yourself too! There are plenty of great tutorials on YouTube. . . . #nativecalifornia #nativeplants #nativebees #pollinators #olamecocenter #ecopsychology #mentalhealth #earthday #2019 #natureconservation #naturephotography #wildliferehab

olamecocenter. Yesterday was the 9th anniversary of the Deep Water Horizon oil spill

Yesterday was the 9th anniversary of the Deep Water Horizon oil spill that affected the Gulf of Mexico and the surrounding areas. The spill effected deep sea habitats up to 1300 m in depth, spreading through ocean currents, harming the flora and fauna that called the Deep sea their home. 2100km of coastal shoreline and habitats suffered. Wildlife populations in the coastal Salt marshes suffered extreme, and in some cases, even permanent damage. It was a catastrophic environmental event that could have been prevented. We are still researching and discovering the long-term impact on the affected habitats. Luckily, thousands of people volunteered and took action to help save the wildlife affected. But the effects were, and still are, devastating. It's time to start putting the environment first. . . . #ecosystems #marinelife #natureconservation #environmentalconservation #olamecocenter #floraandfauna #sustainability #savetheenvironment #wildlifeconservation #gulfofmexico #anniversary

We are part of nature, but we also live our lives disconnected from it. We need to find a way to alter the way we live into a more balanced lifestyle! Eco-living! Not ego-living! Our program is dedicated to this concept. We are excited to be able to share with you. . . . #natureconservation #olamecocenter #naturetherapy #ecopsychology #floraandfauna #ecoliving #nonprofit

Mallow! Bees and butterflies absolutely love Mallow. If you are interested in planting plants that attract pollinators, mallow is definitely a good one to have! This beautiful plant is in our Chatsworth garden in Los Angeles. Here we see a forager bee covered in pollen on her rounds before she goes back to her hive, and a butterfly happy to have mallow around! The more complex the flower, the more the pollinators like it. Some other plants worth having in your pollinator garden are Lavender (if you are in the SFV Spanish Lavender is best) Rosemary, Mexican Salvia (sage) Misty Sage, and African Daisy! . . . #mallow #pollinators #olamecocenter #natureconservation #nativeflora #losangeles #nativecalifornia #bees #forager #bloom #spring

Who can identify this beetle!? Leave your guess in the comments! When we think of pollinators, we don't usually think about beetles. But beetles play an important role in the ecosystem! They usually pollinate larger heavily scented flowers. . . #socalnature #socalwildlife #beetles #insects #natureconservation #naturephotography #biodiversity #ecology #ecosystems #nativefauna #losangeles #pollinators #flowers #olamecocenter #ecocenter #recovery #mentalhealth #naturetherapy
